Villa Zanza

We are a backyard apiary in Englewood, FL, producing small batch honey for our local co-op, neighbors, family and friends. Seasonally our bees forage pollen and nectar from palmetto, cabbage palm, mangrove, carrot trees, elderberry and Brazillian pepper. Year round sources include Spanish needle, pulsey, fire bush and goldenrod.

  • Our honey is lightly strained to remove large impurities and then allowed to sit before bottling to allow smaller particles to rise to the surface. This produces a clean golden honey. Our honey is never heated but remains raw, as nature intended, to ensure the maximum health benefits.

  • We use the wax collected from our honey production to make lip balm. Organic coconut oil makes the balm smooth and silky. Vitamin E is added to promote lip health and healing.

  • Creamed honey is created through a crystallization process that makes the honey smooth and spreadable. By adding organic flavors like cinnamon or raspberry, we make breakfast pop like sunshine on toast.

About Villa Zanza

When my great grandfather, Alden Joseph Adams, arrived in Florida from New York around 1880, he was looking for land on which to build a grand house, farm and general store. He bought property along the banks of the Manatee River on Manatee Avenue in Bradenton. He built a large two story home out of tabby, with a tower and sweeping porch to catch the breezes. He named his homestead “Villa Zanza” and filled it with fruit trees, exotic plants, an aviary, peacocks, horses and dogs. He built his general store on Manatee Avenue. Steamships would arrive at his dock to deliver dry goods and carry his fruit north. Alden Adams died in 1915 leaving two young daughters. The “castle” survived until the 1940’s when it was torn down. The property is now the site of the Manatee Memorial Hospital, and Alden Adams is buried in the Major Adams Cemetery at 3rd St and 9th Ave in Bradenton, on land he gave to the city for such use.

We like to think we are carrying on Alden Adam’s legacy of curiosity, love of plants, animals and learning. Bee keeping is a rewarding hobby. The bees are always teaching us something.
